Fish assessment, monitoring and management

Whilst they are only one component of aquatic ecosystems, fish are obviously very important from a recreational and commercial perspective, as well as their contribution to the ecology of the system. Properly assessing fish communities is more challenging than surveying many other organisms, because fish are more mobile and may be seasonal in their presence.

To overcome some of these challenges, Aquateco typically performs surveys using a range of different techniques, including electrofishing, various netting and trapping techniques and habitat based assessments.

Aquateco offers:

  • Baseline  assessment of fish communities for environmental impact studies.
  • Conservation of fish communities, including rare and threatened species.
  • Biomass and fish passage assessments.
  • Fish salvage and relocation.
  • Investigation of fish kills and ecotoxicology.

We have either led or significantly contributed to the following projects:

  • Lungfish Salvage and Relocation: Lake Manchester, SE Queensland.
  • Hinze Dam Stage 3 Upgrade: South East Queensland.
  • Fish Communities in Ephemeral Waterways: Multiple projects in South and Central Queensland.
  • Currumbin Creek Resnagging Project: South East Queensland.
  • Condamine River Baseline Fish Assessment: Queensland.

Whether you are interested in fish communities as indicators of aquatic ecosystem health, are completing baseline surveys for an impact assessment or require fish salvage and relocation services, Aquateco has the expertise and experience with which to help.
